Angelo Zuccolo, 72, actor, stage director, published poet, and professor emeritus of theatre took his final earthly curtain call on May 15, 2013. He is survived by daughters Angelique and Marielle. He was greeted in heaven by his parents Edith and Angelo, beloved dog Nikki, and an elite cast of family and friends. Angelo was born into a family of actors, poets, sculptors, painters and singers! Within this context, the enchantment and romance of a world filled with sensory, sensuous and sensual poetry were present from sunrise to sunset. His insights into the flavor and spice of the human heart simmered with the delicate aroma of love both found and often lost. He performed in stage, film and television in the United States and abroad, including the title role in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake at the prestigious Holland Festival in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Ligurio in Machiavelli’s The Mandrake, at Norway’s Fana Festival.

He directed over 300 stage and media productions, served as artistic director of the renowned Leonard Melfi Repertory Theatre, and was the author of myriad playscripts and teleplays. His collection of Italian-American short stories, Remember! We Come From Good Stock, was received with acclaim both in the United States and in Italy, and his trilogy of romantic poetry received national applause for its insights into the caring human heart.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 5pm to 8pm at DeMarco and Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson, NY. Services will be held at Unitarian Universalist Church on 183 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, NY, on Monday at 11am, with prior viewing beginning at 9:30am. Internment at Riverhurst Cemetery to immediately follow.

Contributions to the Angelo Zuccolo scholarship, for excellence in theatre may be made to Broome Community College Foundation. In lieu of flowers, Angelo’s desire was for friends and family to celebrate his life with dinner at one’s favorite Italian restaurant in the company of someone special, someone lonely, someone in need. Angelo lived and performed with all his heart. In one of the finest of theatre traditions, he is now in the company of countless co-stars, appearing onstage and in the midnight sky with applause of eternity.

One of the hallmarks of coursework at Broome Community College is the synergy between theory and real-life experience. Now, a brand new course is taking that ideal to a new level. Students who enroll in BCC’s Wedding Planning class through the Hospitality Programs Department will have the opportunity to plan a real wedding from conception to execution.

Pending SUNY approval, Wedding Planning will become part of the curriculum of the Events Management degree, which will be housed under the Business and Public Services Division.

Rey Wojdat, chair of the Hospitality Programs Department at BCC, was looking for the right person to teach Wedding Planning. He says he found the perfect instructor in Lisa DeSantis.

“With wedding planning, what you’re selling is a dream,” said Wojdat. “Lisa knows how to make a dream a reality.”

Wojdat had gotten to know DeSantis over a few years as the business manager of Coral Isle Swim Pools in Vestal, which is owned by her fiancé.

“My talent is to recognize everybody else’s talent I had wanted her to teach for me for three years already. When I devised this course, she just owned it.”

DeSantis is a former events planner with vast experience and knowledge that encompasses the entire hospitality industry. She has degrees in hospitality and hotel administration from Paul Smith’s College and the University of Nevada and has been working in the hospitality industry since high school. Her extensive resume includes all areas of hotel administration (accounting, wedding and event planning and director of sales), event planning for Lockheed Martin, wedding cake design and pastry decorating.

Now she’ll be able to add teaching to her resume: “This is the first class I’ve ever taught other than teaching staff,” said DeSantis. “When Rey told me about the Wedding Planning course, I realized I missed my former career. Wedding planning was always one of my favorite roles on the various properties I worked.”

As students tap into DeSantis’ experience, guess whose wedding they’ll be using as the guinea pig for their real-world experience? Yes, it’s true. As DeSantis prepares to walk down the aisle, her students will be there every step of the way.

“I’m planning my own wedding and thought it would be interesting for students to join me at different venues, come with me to the tastings, and plan it in real life. I’m excited for some of my vendors to come in as guest speakers for my class as well. We’re not going to just teach to the book. Everyone will get their hands involved in it!”

DeSantis will teach students how to stay within a client’s budget as well as evaluate and interview clients to understand their needs.

“It’s all about the initial visit,” she explained. “Instead of telling them what you’re going to do for them, listen to your client’s needs. This is where a lot of planners fall short. They’re so concerned about the way they plan, that they forget about what client wants.”

Students will have no problem applying their skills, according to Wojdat, who says career opportunities for students with a hospitality degree are endless.

“Students think they only thing they can do is work in a hotel or restaurant with this degree,” he said. “Hospitality graduates nowadays are taking away jobs from business degrees. We are the people industry. Lisa is a shining example of that, and students will understand there are many different venues they can pursue,” he said.

And even though Wojdat expects Wedding Planning to skew heavily female, it’s valuable for anyone looking to pursue a career in hospitality.

“Wedding planning is an enormous industry,” he said. “It’s important for students interested in catering. It’s a great fit for photography students, because at some point they’ll probably take wedding photos. Florists gain experience through wedding planning and those creating and selling and designing wedding invitations and favors will want to participate too.

“I also tell students in the world of event planning you have to be a jack of all trades. You need to even know a little bit about carpentry to fix things when they break and be a little bit of an electrician. Lisa is not afraid to get her hands dirty and yet at the same time, she is the consummate executive. If she can teach students all that, they’ll be way ahead of the curve,” said Wojdat.

As for the pressure of planning a wedding for a wedding expert? “Don’t worry. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I’m not the bridezilla type!” said DeSantis. “And…” she pauses, “I’ll definitely consider taking their advice.”

Wojdat anticipates that the Events Management curriculum will be approved in September. Also in the works in addition to an Events Management degree (pending SUNY approval) is a pending Casino Management degree.

BCC’s 4th Annual Homeless Sleep Out was a success. Willie Murray, BCC Student Trustee, Tyrone King, BCC’s Chemical Dependent Counseling student and Gregory Derricks, BCC’s Student Housing SA Rep., reported that 13 students spent the night in boxes, tents, and sleeping bags to spread awareness about the Homeless problem in Broome County. About $700.00 dollars was raised for the event.

Willie Murray says that Homelessness can happen to anybody. Wes Warren, BCC’s chair of Criminal Justice/Homeland Security reports that the Broome County Homeless Coalition assisted 76 homeless vets last year. One of his Criminal Justice students was homeless for two weeks in 2009, so Warren spent the night along with the students to show his support.
